Admire the 800-year-old Son Tra heritage banyan tree that thousands of people love.
Although located in a rather desolate area, the Son Tra heritage banyan tree (Son Tra District, Da Nang City) still attracts thousands of visitors every day because of its unique beauty.
According to the record recognized as a Vietnam Heritage Tree in 2014, the banyan tree located in sub-area 63 of the Son Tra Nature Reserve is called the High Mountain Banyan Tree, belonging to the Mulberry family (Moraceae). Local people and tourists often call this banyan tree the Son Tra heritage banyan tree. This “keyword” is quite hot and tourists often search for it whenever they have the opportunity to visit the coastal city of Da Nang.
The report on Determining the age and growth assessment of the High Mountain Banyan Tree on the Son Tra Peninsula, conducted by experts from the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, said that through tree trunk growth drilling, it was determined that this banyan tree is about 800 years old.
From the center of Da Nang City, visitors go along Hoang Sa Street to Son Tra Peninsula. Once here, just follow the tourist route Bai Bac – Ghenh Da – Mui Nghe. When reaching Bai Bac intersection, go about 3.5 km more, before your eyes appears a banyan tree with branches growing towards the sea.
Coming closer, many people will be surprised to see the tree trunk architecture about 25 m high, the circumference of the tree trunk is up to 5-6 people hugging. The tree’s root system is up to hundreds of square meters wide. In particular, each branch growing far away has additional branches that stick to the ground to make a “support” that looks very strange. Checking the specialized functions, the banyan tree has about 10 additional roots. Many other small roots are also reaching down to the ground to help balance the tree trunk.
On these hot summer days, more and more people and tourists are looking for the maximum root to visit. Because when coming here, in addition to being able to freely admire the scenery and admire the majestic beauty of the banyan tree, everyone feels comfortable because they can breathe the cool air.
“With a wide canopy covering a corner of the forest, sitting under the banyan tree feels as cool as sitting in an air conditioner. Sitting under the tree, the sun does not reach my head, I like to take pictures and read books”, Ms. Le Thi Nga (a tourist from Hue) shared.
In particular, many tourists are excited when at this time, the Son Tra heritage banyan tree is bearing ripe yellow fruit covering the whole tree. If you come to the banyan tree at quiet times, when there are few people, you will easily see the red-shanked douc langur – an animal known as the “primates queen”, a property of the Son Tra peninsula, shedding branches to eat fruit.
